Andrew Zimmern in Bizarre Foods of Asia

Have you watched Andrew Zimmern in his Bizarre Foods of Asia at Travel Channel? Okay, it’s actually a repeated show where my younger daughter kept watching and never get bored over and over again. She said that she wanted to be like him someday, to travel and search for the most unique and bizarre food in the world.

While she was watching TV the other night where Andrew featured the Philippines, (was first aired February of 2007) I joined with my daughter and witnessed how Andrew actually tasted different exotic and unique food that can only be found in the Philippines. He said that eating ice cream in a bun is something different. It’s more fun in the Philippines right?

What else did he eat during his trip in the Philippines? He ate Balot and Tokneneng, Water Crickets, Soup #5, Mangrove Worms, Coconut Grubs, Okoy, Bamboo Shoots and Stuffed Frog.

Are you a wise consumer?

Today’s economic crisis is no longer a temporary situation. We’ve been dealing this for so long now. Whether we like it or not, we need to be practical and wise in all our investment and make sure everything is worth in every penny that we spent.

Often, you’ll find different promotional items sold in a very low price. Sometimes we buy the products right away and later regret when we used them and found out to be so different the way they were being advertised. When my kids were still babies, I tried different brands of diapers before I settled to the one that never irritates or harms their skin just like molicare super plus. My elder daughter has a very sensitive skin when she was young, and still is, so I never took a chance using any other brand unless tested and recommended by her pediatrician. I wasn’t smart enough that time. I chose the most expensive diaper yet I could have one quality brand in a very low price.

FTF #82: Pasta ala Maize

This is actually my daughter’s recipe so I’m calling it Pasta Ala Maize. My daughter was in the mood today in the kitchen and accidentally prepared pasta with her own recipe. I don’t know if I will call it carbonara because it has  tomato but the other ingredients include cream, cheese and tuna. She used San Marino and Chili Century Tuna combined and sauteed all the ingredients in tuna flakes oil.  It’s yummy,  I swear. I can eat  pene pasta with cheese alone and that’s quite enough for me. :)

Today is just the start of her two-month summer vacation.   I hope that she finds comfort in the other corner of the house,  other than the kitchen.  She’s on a diet by the way and having a workout everyday.

Safety and Driving Tips

The documented news that I watched this morning was horrible. I was frustrated and wanted to switch the program  to other channel. The accident I watched made me sick and wish there were enough warnings in the road. Oh well, not only warning but also a disciplined driver for smooth driving. A motorcycle rider and a private vehicle driver were both involved in the collision. I think that the authorities must strictly implement the law to those who are caught driving while heavily under the influence of alcohol and drug. I wanted to blame all the drivers who are often driving with no safety gear especially the biker. They should wear helmets, sidi cobra boots for comfort and masks for their protection. I wished that Driving 101 subject be included in the school curriculum so that these young men would learn how to behave the way they should be while driving.

FTF 81# Pancit Lomi

Lomi noodles is popular in the Philippines. It is usually served in a Chinese or expensive restaurant. It is also common sold by street food vendors already packed in a container or in a plastic bag for merienda.

There are different ways of cooking lomi. I’ll share you the easiest. It is cooked with fresh egg noodles. Lomi noodles could be think, thin or flat but whatever you want your noodles to be, the taste wouldn’t matter at all.

How to cook. In a pan, saute onion and garlic. Put the broth and bring to boil. Add carrot, kikiam pork and liver and bring to boil. Next is cabbage and noodles. Simmer for 5 to ten minutes. The broth will thicken as it boils because of the starch from noodles itself. Season with patis and pepper. Pour the beaten eggs and slightly stir until cooked. Option. You may the liver just before few minutes before it is cooked to keep it just done.
